This film is adapted from a novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. By telling the stories of Minke, an educated Javanese man who went to Dutch school, Annelies, a mixed-blood woman, and her mother, Nyai Ontosoroh, the film portraits racism, classism, sexism, and oppression during the Dutch colonial time. I am impressed by how Nyai Ontosoroh, a native woman who is a concubine to a Dutch man, toughly fought in court for her beloved daughter. The film also shows the importance of journalism for empoweing the society and informing the public about injustice.
