女性不能有自己的意見與情慾，沒有自由的壓迫處境，使得不少畫面可能讓人產生不適感，但導演鏡頭下唯美的畫面和美麗的越南風景，又不時讓壓抑與不適有了宣洩之處。
即使看似沒有出口，片中還是存在小小的抵抗。而悲劇，則是各種微小能動性與抵抗下的結果。

The film unfolds a story of 19th-century Vietnam, where men hold absolute power in the feudal patriarchal system. A 14-year-old girl is married off to a wealthy master and becomes his third concubine. The suffocating environment and silent violence towards women, may lead to a sense of discomfort and unease. However, the director's skilful portrait of the breathtaking Vietnamese landscapes and visually stunning shots bring moments of catharsis and release.
